Jones: Ledley situation 'Catch-22'

10 July 2009 20:01
A host of Premier League clubs are being linked with the 22-year-old Wales international, who only has a year to run on his existing Bluebirds' contract. Cardiff chairman Peter Ridsdale has previously insisted the Championship outfit want to discuss a favourable new contract with the player. Jones hopes the club can get Ledley to commit, but there have not been any talks yet with his agents. Speaking ahead of the club's first-ever game at the new Cardiff City Stadium against Chasetown on Friday evening, he told Sky Sports News: "I don't want Joe to go, I'm sure the fans don't want Joe to go but both parties are right in what they say - Joe says he hasn't been offered a contract but we've got to get his agents to sit in front of us to offer him a contract and they're not very forthcoming at the moment. "So if Joe wants to stay here the chairman has made it clear he will have to sign an extension to his contract otherwise we'll have to let him go because we can't let him run his contract down although we feel quite strong in that position because then we can get compensation for him because of his age. "So it's just a Catch-22 at the moment. But we want him to stay, I think Joe loves it here, he wants to take this club into the Premiership and he would like to be part of that and the only way he can be part of it if he signs an extension to his contract." Jones added if the club can keep building and use the money generated from previous sales then hopefully the Bluebirds can get stronger and stronger. "Every year we have to sell our best players and we keep knocking on the door so we must be doing something right here," he said, although he believes the Championship will again be hard this season. "Everybody wants the Holy Grail, everybody wants to get in the Premiership, everybody will feel that they have got a chance of doing that, we'll be one of them clubs along with the rest of them but I've said many times, it's the hardest division to get out of, Premiership's the hardest one to stay in, we're one of many clubs trying to achieve that goal that everyone wants."
