Jones laments two points dropped

Cardiff manager Dave Jones held a post-game inquest with his players after they twice failed to capitalise on a lead in their 2-2 draw with Barnsley at Cardiff City Stadium.

The Bluebirds had led through a superb Peter Whittingham volley after 21 minutes and Dekel Keinan's first goal for the club eight minutes from time, but on both occasions Tykes substitute Andy Gray levelled as Cardiff missed the chance to move into the automatic promotion places in the npower Championship table.

Jones said: "I think we looked nervous, the whole place seemed to be, and within that we did not play well. But we got ourselves in a position to win and it's one of the things we spoke about, because it's on your mind. So we wanted to know what can be done to try and lift everyone. We have got it off our chests and everyone had a chance to have their say."

Jones, who has seen his side take just one point from their last three games, kept his players in the dressing room for over an hour after the final whistle, and he believes that the tension of chasing promotion is having an effect.

"Don't read into it," he said of keeping his players in.

"We just wanted to try and make things better, see what we could do better, how we could do it, what is needed. It's not about recriminations so don't fall into that trap.

"We know we didn't play well. We got our noses in front twice and should have seen the game out."

The home players were furious in the first half when Craig Bellamy appeared to be fouled in the area by Barnsley captain Jason Shackell, and Jones believes his side should have had a penalty but accepted that it did not cost them the game.

"It looked exactly the same as the one QPR got," he said.

"It shows how difficult it is for referees. When we see it on the video it is (a penalty). The lad touches the ball and takes Craig out. One team got it and we didn't. The referee had a bit of help on the line and he (the assistant referee) maybe should have seen it but they didn't and it didn't cost us the game."
