Leeds drew 1 - 1 against Dave Jones' Wednesday side with former Bluebird Jay Bothroyd putting the Owls ahead.
Leeds levelled in the second half and as their several of their fans celebrated near the pitch one fella went onto the playing surface and decked Kirkland.
Speaking after the game Dave Jones called for Leeds fans to be banned from away grounds.
"They should be banned from every away ground now," said Jones, who was taunted by visiting fans' chants during the game. "They should be punished. It's just upsetting that they are allowed to do it. It was a great game but we are talking about vile animals instead. "You talk about racism in the game, but they were chanting things as well. I've had it for 12 years and it is just upsetting that they are able to do it." Neil Warnock responded by saying "I thought it was an absolute disgrace. They should get the guy, prosecute him, put him in prison. "I'm not proud to be Leeds manager when I see that. "I don't mind the atmosphere, there's been elbows flying, but to see things like that on the field of play, I'm embarrassed." Leeds released a statement after the game. It read: "Leeds would like to publicly apologise and condemn the actions of the fan who attacked Chris Kirkland. "The club will fully co-operate with the police to identity the fan involved.
