Championship Carling Cup Casualties

Six Championship teams were knocked out of the Carling Cup in the first round matches played on Tuesday night. Several matches were postponed because of the various riots in the UK especialy London but from the games that did go ahead there were some shocks. Macclesfield beat Hull 2 - 0 at the KC Stadium. Barnet beat Portsmouth at Fratton Park and Shrewsbury survived a comeback from Derby to win 3 - 2 at Pride Park. Jay Emmanuel Thomas scored for Ipswich but Northampton came from behind to win at Portman Rd. Morecambe won at Barnsley meaning five of the upsets came at the homes of the Championship sides. The other Championship team dumped out of the competition was Coventry. The lost at Gigg Lane to Bury. Other sides had scares, Leeds were stretched by Bradford, Burnley needed extra time and Forest needed penalties. Cardiff start their campaign at Oxford tonight.
