Cardiff old boy Brian McDermott returns to South Wales

Reading manager Brian McDermott used to be a Cardiff City player. ThenMcDermott played for City back in 1988 and one of his daughters was born in the City.McDermott for many years has been worked with the reserves and as Chief Scout at Reading but when Brendan Rodgers was sacked at Christmas time he took control of the first team. Within a month he'd taken his side to Liverpool and beaten them in the FA Cup and since then they have made a remarkable charge towards the play offs. When Rodgers was sacked Reading were just 2 points above the relegation zone but in the 16 League games McDermott has been in charge they have moved to within 9 points of the play off places but with two games in hand.A play off place might just be out of reach especially if Cardiff can win tomorrow but full credit to the job he has done. Next up Reading face Newcastle so it won't be easy for them."There's no point talking about the play-offs," he said. "The fact is to still have a chance of getting in at this stage is amazing given the start to the season we had."It looked like we were going down and it's been an incredible turnaround. The players deserve all the credit, they've been fantastic and I just hope we can keep it going until the end."But the bottom line is these next couple of games are massive for us. Cardiff and Newcastle are both big clubs so let's see where we are after that."and nowLooking back at his time at cardiff he said."I had 18 great months there. One of my daughters was born there and the manager Frank Burrows instilled a lot of his principles in me."He was tough and aggressive but he was a positive man and I really liked him."I remember scoring two goals direct from corners in one season and I also scored against Crewe to clinch promotion one year. It will be nice to go back but we're going there to win."Cardiff v ReadingSaturday 3:00pm.
