Cardiff Launch Counter-claim

Cardiff have lodged a counter-claim against club president Sam Hammam in an escalation of their legal battle with the former Bluebirds owner.

Hammam, who was in control of the Welsh club between 2000 and 2006, confirmed in February that Cardiff owner Vincent Tan and the club were being sued for nearly £6million owed to Swiss-based creditors Langston.

The historic debt dates back to the issuing of loan notes worth £24million when Hammam was at the helm of Cardiff and the matter between the two parties originally went to the High Court in 2008.

On that occasion Mr Justice Briggs stated that, in effect, "Hammam was Langston" but Malaysian businessman Tan, who bought Cardiff in 2010, struck a £15million deal in 2013 to settle the debt.

Part of that deal saw Hammam become honorary life president at Cardiff but the Sky Bet Championship club has now issued a counter-claim against the 67-year-old Lebanese and Langston with the High Court.

The claim was made on Wednesday and will run alongside the one made by Langston, which claims that Cardiff are in default of a £5.75million payment which should have been paid at the end of January.

A procedural hearing - known as a case management conference - will be fixed in the next few weeks when it is understood Cardiff will claim the club actually overpaid on the debt.
