Somner makes U's switch

League Two strugglers Cambridge United have moved to strengthen their porous defence by signing Brentford defender Matt Somner on a month's loan.

The 21-year-old is out of favour at Griffin Park under Martin Allen and has not featured in the Bees' first team since August, so he is relishing the chance to kick-start his career with Cambridge.

"I've been at Brentford for a few years now and since the new manager's come in I haven't been fitting into his plans, so I've been trying to get myself out on loan," Somner told the club's official website.

"At the moment it's just going to be a month's loan and we'll see how it goes.

"Hopefully it will go well for the club and for myself and then we'll see what happens at the end of it.

"Personally, I'd like to get the club out of the trouble they're in and maybe get a contract."

Somner has made 84 league appearances for Brentford since breaking into the first-team picture in 2001.
