U's ease to win against Exiles

Barry Corr scored twice on his Cambridge debut as his new side beat Newport 3-0 on the opening day of the League Two season.

Corr volleyed Harrison Dunk's corner beyond Joe Day after 24 minutes to cap an impressive opening spell for the U's, who threatened from set pieces throughout.

They felt they should already have been ahead after Leon Legge's third-minute effort from Dunk's cross was judged not to have crossed the line.

Six minutes before the interval Sam Beasant was required to tip over Yan Klukowski's rasping drive from long range.

Corr doubled the lead after 65 minutes, running onto Jordan Slew's pass as the injured Alex Rodman played him onside before burying a finish into the top corner of the net.

Newport were handed a route back into the game shortly afterwards when Dunk brought down Alex Boden in the box, but debutant Beasant dived to his left to keep out Medy Elito's penalty.

It was 3-0 after 80 minutes through Robbie Simpson, who fired Gearoid Morrissey's pass beyond Day only three minutes after coming on as a substitute.
