Graham Carey equaliser ends Cambridge play-off hopes

An injury-time Graham Carey goal earned Plymouth a 2-2 Sky Bet League Two draw at Cambridge to extinguish their opponents' play-off chances, which looked set to carry on to the final game of the season.

The U's had staged an extraordinary late comeback to lead, having trailed 1-0 with six minutes remaining.

Jamille Matt's goal for the visitors 19 minutes from the end looked to have won it for Plymouth, having outpaced Josh Coulson and buried a finish past Will Norris.

Ben Williamson drilled a low equaliser for the U's, beating Luke McCormick after excellent work on the right by Zeli Ismail, and less than two minutes later substitute Jimmy Spencer rolled the ball home after more good work by Ismail saw the ball fall his way.

But Carey blasted past Norris from outside the box in stoppage time, and then Hiram Boating fired over with virtually the last kick of a thrilling climax to the game.

Results elsewhere meant that Plymouth cannot be promoted automatically either and are consigned to the play-offs themselves.
