Cambridge and nine-man Carlisle play out damaging goalless draw

Cambridge and nine-man Carlisle shared a goalless draw, damaging both clubs' chances of making the Sky Bet League Two play-offs.

The game sparked into the life after 23 minutes when Carlisle's Hallam Hope was shown a straight red card for a dangerous challenge on full-back Darnell Furlong.

Despite the setback the visitors had a great chance soon after when Alex Gilliead fired just wide after being freed by Charlie Wyke.

For the U's James Dunne was denied by a fine Mark Ellis block, before Ben Williamson saw a goal ruled out for offside after he tapped in Leon Legge's header.

After half-time Jimmy Spencer ran through unchallenged but dragged a shot well wide. The Cumbrians nearly stunned their hosts but Derek Asamoah somehow lifted the ball over the bar from two yards.

Luke Berry saw a header from Harrison Dunk's corner tipped over the bar five minutes from the end. Deep in injury time Ellis was sent off for time-wasting, picking up a second yellow card, as Cambridge were unable to make their numerical advantage count.
