Cambridge United loanee Bird makes dream debut

Cambridge United's Ryan Bird got off to the perfect start for his Hartlepool loan period this weekend as he scored the winning goal.

Bird joined the Pools team last week and had only trained with the team twice before making his debut against AFC Wimbledon.

A serious injury to Hartlepool's Michael Woods brought a lengthy stop in the second half as he suffered a dislocated ankle and fractured fibula. The injury spurred the team on for the win with Bird burying a Jack Compton cross.

The 27-year-old loanee would later describe the match as a "dream debut".

Bird has made 17 appearances and scored 4 goals for Cambridge United since he signed from Portsmouth on a free transfer at the start of the season. Before joining Hartlepool on loan Bird had been told that he was surplus to requirements at the R Costings Abbey Stadium but turned down a offer to make a permanent move away from the club.
