Cambridge United chief executive backs Premier League B team plan for Football League Trophy

During a recent Football League meeting an idea was put forward that would see Premier League B teams entered in to the Johnstone's Paint Trophy (Football League Trophy) which currently sees Football League One and Football League Two teams take part.

Cambridge United chief executive Jez George sees this as a positive step forward and believes it should be further investigated after he opposed the League 3 concept that was proposed last year which would have seen top flight clubs' under-21 sides enter in to the league.

"It was promoted to the clubs that it would in no way lead to that situation (a way of putting League Three back on the table) and it would slightly revamp and reinvigorate the competition." said George to Cambridge Evening News.

"Ultimately, a lot of money percolates down the pyramid from the Premier League – they're the paymasters of football – and it's a way of helping them achieve a goal while it may well add to a competition rather than detract from it."

If successful the move could see the Premier League B teams join the two Sky Bet Leagues as soon as next season. For this to happen there would be a change in the format to 16 groups, each featuring one under-21 side with the winners moving through to a knockout stage.

The Football League Trophy was founded in 1983 and has seen a number of format changes throughout the years, the last change to the trophy in the 2006-2007 season saw conference teams dropped from the competition.
