Bury captain Dave Challinor has admitted the Shakers are likely to struggle again next season unless the club receives some much-needed investment.
The Gigg Lane club successfully staved off the threat of relegation despite a downturn in results towards the end of the campaign, but Challinor is predicting another season of toil at the wrong end of the League Two table next term.
He told the club's official website: "Like most, this place needs investment to be successful and unfortunately that's the way things are and the way things go.
"If you want to compete in this division, then clubs are spending big money.
"Unfortunately with the crowd averages and financial things we are not able to compete with them.
"The gaffer's got a tough job to do and he's got to work some magic with a small budget.
"We've got the nucleus of a good squad, but you look at the teams that have got the clout financially and their squads have more depth."
