Port Vale 0-0 Bury: Report

26 March 2011 15:19
Shakers claim crucial point Ten-man Bury battled to secure a hard-earned goalless draw which knocked Port Vale's promotion prospects. Vale should have put the game to bed inside the first 20 minutes as they squandered four excellent opportunities, with top-scorer Marc Richards the most profligate. Doug Loft's shot was cleared off the line by Efe Sodje after Cameron Belford failed to hold Lewis Haldane's cross, then Richards failed from three openings, all set up by Tom Pope. The easiest came in the 15th minute when Pope's header came back off the bar and Richards cracked the rebound into the ground and over the top from six yards. Luck was also not favouring Vale and it deserted them again five minutes into the second half when Loft hammered against the post after a terrific move involving Haldane and Pope. Bury produced next to nothing as an attacking force and looked really up against it when skipper Steven Schumacher was sent off for a second yellow card 13 minutes from time. But Vale failed to make their numerical advantage tell as the visitors played better with 10 men than they had with 11.
