Bury boss Alan Knill was upset with referee Andy D'Urso for bringing a premature end to his side's bid for automatic promotion.
The Shakers missed out on a top-three finish by one goal, having beaten Accrington Stanley 1-0 on the final day of the season, with Knill unhappy that D'Urso seemed to end the game early following a pitch invasion.
He told The Times: "We thought there were still three minutes to play, but the referee decided to blow and get off the pitch quickly and he went past me like an Olympic sprinter."
Bury loan striker Phil Jevons added: "Some of the lads heard the referee say there were still three minutes to play.
"Then he blew his whistle and ran off. I don't know whether he was worried about his own safety, or the players' safety, but we needed those extra minutes."
