Knill praises spot-on Shakers
Bury boss Alan Knill hailed his side`s performance after they saw off Shrewsbury on penalties to reach the regional quarter-finals of the Johnstone`s Paint Trophy.
Goalkeeper Cameron Belford was the matchwinner after the second-round tie at Gigg Lane finished all square following 90 goalless minutes. Each side converted their first five spot-kicks to send the tie into sudden death, Belford then saved Danny O'Donnell's effort before firing home himself to seal a 6-5 shootout triumph.
Knill said: "It's a much-maligned competition but it's a step closer to Wembley and it keeps the feel-good factor going.
"It was an exciting finish but I thought the whole game was a really good game of football. We were pretty good first half but then they came into it. You have to expect that, they are a good side and they are up there for a reason, but I thought we were good.
"We had a lot of energy, especially first half, and should have capitalised on some of our chances. We just lacked a little care in front of goal.
"We made some changes but the players played with no fear and that's what we asked of them."
