Gulls and Shakers share spoils

Midfielder Mike Jones gave the visiting side the lead in the 38th minute after latching onto Ryan Lowe's through ball, dispatching a low, angled drive past Gulls' keeper Michael Poke. But the Gulls - who have won just twice in the league all season - levelled in the second half with Elliot Benyon scoring his fifth goal of the season with a powerful drive towards the near post on the hour mark. The Shakers' on-loan striker Tom Elliot spurned the best of their chances in the opening half, first firing over from 12 yards after some good wing play from Richie Baker. He then side-footed Tom Newey's pull-back wide from even closer range. Gulls defender Chris Robertson missed two glorious opportunities to win the game for his side in the second half, both from Kevin Nicholson corners. Midfielder Nicky Wroe also went close with a long-range effort for Torquay but the Shakers weathered the home resurgence well and were good value for at least a point.
