Duo wait on Shakers bows

Seb Carole and Gregg Wylde are hoping to make their Bury debuts when Southend visit Gigg Lane in the second round of the FA Cup.

Former Brighton midfielder Carole, who played under Shakers boss Kevin Blackwell during his time at Leeds, has agreed non-contract terms having impressed during a trial spell.

Wylde joined on loan from Bolton last week, but the ex-Rangers youngster was handed a watching brief by Blackwell for Saturday's 2-2 draw with Bournemouth.

Leicester's decision to make young forward Tom Hopper unavailable for cup action is expected to open the door to Wylde, while fellow loanees Matt Doherty, Zac Thompson and Troy Hewitt are all eligible.

Centre-back Adam Lockwood is set for two further weeks on the sidelines due to a groin tear, while captain Steven Schumacher misses out in central midfield with ankle ligament damage that is set to keep him sidelined for up to a month.

Strikers David Healy (calf) and Andy Bishop (foot) remain out along with fellow forward Lenell John-Lewis (knee). Defender Phil Picken (knee) is a long-term absentee.

Southend boss Paul Sturrock will be forced to change his winning formula for the trip to Bury with both Britt Assombalonga and Tamika Mkandawire ineligible.

Sturrock has named an unchanged starting line-up for the last five matches stretching all the way back to the 3-2 win at Bristol Rovers - the club's first match back in league action after their 3-0 FA Cup first-round success over Stockport at the start of November.

But that must change at Gigg Lane with 12-goal leading scorer Assombalonga and midfielder Mkandawire, on loan from Watford and Millwall respectively, both denied permission to feature by their parent clubs.

Sturrock will also assess one or two other unnamed players as the Shrimpers bid to make the third round for the first time in four seasons.

"We've got a couple of niggles and knocks but we'll give them every opportunity to grab their chance," he told the club's official website.
