Bury 3-0 Stevenage: Match Report

08 February 2011 21:59
Shakers keep record going Bury strengthened their grip on a League Two play-off place with a 3- 0 home win over Stevenage. Fit-again striker Andy Bishop marked his first start since September with an eighth-minute opener. Veteran centre-half Efe Sodje doubled Bury's lead in the 61st minute before top-scorer Ryan Lowe sealed a third straight win with 20 minutes left. A bright Bury start was rewarded as Bishop, who has been dogged by tendonitis, claimed his third goal of the season. Steve Schumacher's cross found the striker 12 yards out and the ball deflected off his knee, wide of goalkeeper Chris Day and in off the far post. Day pulled off a superb save moments later to deny winger Andy Haworth before Lowe blazed over after linking with Bishop. Stevenage rallied with Byron Harrison firing narrowly wide, while Bury keeper Cameron Belford did well to keep out a Michael Bostwick header and a Scott Laird free-kick. But Sodje gave the hosts breathing space by stealing in to poke home from a Mike Jones cross. Craig Reid came off the bench for the visitors and saw two efforts cleared off the line by Tom Lees, while Bostwick headed wide. Bury were assured of the three points, though, when Lowe headed home from Haworth's cross for his 18th of the season.
