Sweeney keeps Shakers on the up

Bury jumped to within four points of the play-off places after a 2-1 home win over struggling Walsall.

A stunning free-kick from Peter Sweeney sealed a deserved victory for the hosts after Walsall striker Jamie Paterson had cancelled out Mat Sadler's own goal.

The Shakers dominated the first half and Walsall goalkeeper Jimmy Walker was left helpless when David Amoo's cross was deflected into the net by visiting defender Sadler.

Walsall midfielder Adam Chambers then missed an absolute sitter, heading over the top after Cameron Belford had saved his first effort, but the Saddlers equalised when Paterson wrong-footed Belford to float a 25-yard free-kick into the top corner.

Sweeney was determined to get in on the action though and curled a sublime left-footed free-kick in off the post a minute later.

Neither side were able to assert themselves on a scrappy second-half, but Walsall substitute Claude Gnakpa slammed a left-footed effort just wide of the post and Steve Schumacher went close for Bury, shooting narrowly wide from long-range.
