Ruffels denies Shakers

Josh Ruffels scored his first senior goal to hand third-placed Oxford a 1-1 draw at Bury in League Two.

Craig Jones broke the deadlock in the 56th minute only for Ruffels to equalise two minutes later before the two sides settled for a hard- fought point.

Bury started brightly as Andrew Tutte burst down the right and crossed for Anton Forrester, who mistimed his header to make it an easy save for keeper Ryan Clarke.

Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro then tested Clarke while Forrester fired over from 20 yards.

Oxford replied with Danny Rose blazing over from Deane Smalley's cut- back before Tom Newey's long-range strike kept Bury keeper Brian Jensen alert.

But Bury's positive start to the second half was rewarded when Chris Sedgwick's cross was spilled by Clarke and Jones, who played the initial ball wide, fired into the open goal.

Oxford hit straight back as midfielder Ruffels, 20, headed home at the back post from Rose's corner. They then brought on ex-Premier League strikers David Connolly and Dave Kitson in a bid to claim all three points.

But Bury went closest to winning it as Clarke blocked substitute Danny Nardiello's close-range effort before having to punch away Tutte's dipping strike.
