    Shrews spoil Brewers bow

    08 Aug 2009 - 17:19:01

Burton Albion's first game in the Football League ended in defeat as they were beaten 3-1 by Shrewsbury Town at the New Meadow.

Jake Robinson marked his Town debut with the opener after ten minutes, with Dave Hibbert adding a second four minutes into the second half.

Greg Pearson scored the first-ever Brewers league goal just after the hour mark, but Joss Labadie ensured that the Shrews took all three points.

Torquay United's return to League Two was more successful as they won 2-0 at home to Chesterfield, with debutant Scott Rendell and Lee Mansell the goalscorers at Plainmoor.

Notts County gave Sven-Goran Eriksson a perfect start to his time as director of football at Meadow Lane, sweeping Bradford City aside 5-0, with Lee Hughes marking his Magpies debut with a hat-trick.

Rotherham United needed a last-minute Paul Warne goal to secure a 1-0 win at home to Accrington Stanley, while Northampton Town were held to a goalless draw by Macclesfield Town.

Bournemouth secured a superb 3-0 win at Bury, while Port Vale and Rochdale drew 1-1 at Vale Park.

A Paul Benson goal secured a 2-1 victory for Dagenham & Redbridge at Crewe Alexandra and Lincoln City edged out Barnet 1-0 at Sincil Bank.

Crisis club Darlington were beaten 3-1 at Aldershot Town, while Cheltenham Town saw off Grimsby Town 2-1 at Whaddon Road - with Barry Hayles netting the winner.

Marc Pugh rescued a point for Hereford United at Morecambe, with his second goal of the game in the final minute securing a 2-2 draw.
