Burton Albion have handed a trial to the former Wigan Athletic and Port Vale defender Matt Carragher.

The 27-year-old was released by Vale boss Brian Horton at the end of last season and is expected to play in Burton's friendly against Gresley Rovers on Tuesday.

Carragher started his career with Wigan and played 119 League games for the Latics before moving to Vale Park six years ago.

He went on to play almost 200 League games for Port Vale, scoring one goal.
