Torquay 2-2 Burton Albion: Report

Richards doubles up in draw Justin Richards marked his debut with a double but it was not enough to secure an opening-day win for Burton as they drew 2-2 with Torquay. Richards, who arrived from Port Vale over the summer, saw a number of opportunities go begging in the first half but opened the scoring with a calm finish shortly after the interval. His header from Tom Parkes' cross four minutes later doubled Burton's lead, but Rene Howe pulled one back following good work from Lee Mansell, who then equalised from close range late on. Parkes was sent off for a second bookable offence to add to Paul Peschisolido's frustrations. It was Richards who looked most likely to open the scoring prior to the break as he tested home goalkeeper Robert Olejnik on three occasions. The striker's brace then put Burton in control, only for Howe to give Torquay hope on his first appearance for the club. Ian Morris volleyed a Billy Kee cross wide soon after, before Mansell struck to rescue a point for last season's beaten play-off finalists.
