Brewers win at last

A Matt Fish own goal ended Burton's run of eight successive defeats with a 1-0 victory and put a huge dent in Gillingham's play-off hopes.

Fish's moment of misfortune gave the Brewers their first win in 17 games and their first points under caretaker manager Gary Rowett.

Burton had a chance to grab the early goal they desperately needed when Justin Richards charged onto a pass from fellow striker Greg Pearson only to shoot into the side-netting.

Both teams struggled to create openings in a scrappy first half, though Richards wriggled free for a shot into the arms of Gills goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga.

The Gills enjoyed a promising spell midway through the half, but Jordan Obita fired straight at Burton keeper Ross Atkins, who also dealt with Joe Kuffour's attempt to steer a shot into the far corner.

The hosts made bright start to the second half and Maghoma went close with a 25-yard shot before they got a lucky break in the 54th minute.

Maghoma's shot was kept out by Gazzaniga but the loose ball bounced in off Gills full-back Fish.

Richards and substitute Lionel Ainsworth were both denied by the Gills keeper as Burton threatened a second goal.
