Webb at Sunderland

It's a fifth Burnley game of the season for Howard Webb from Rotherham today at Sunderland, and his first Burnley away game since his horror show at Everton at the end of 2009. He'd previously had a decent game when we entertained Aston Villa but his performance at Goodison Park had you wondering just how on earth he'd been selected for the World Cup.He was better for the home game against West Ham but it was still a disappointing performance. However, there were no real complaints of his handling of the Stoke home game although as always he appeared to want to be the star of the show. He's refereed 30 domestic games this season and he's reached 106 yellow cards but just four red cards. Stephen Jordan was the first to see Webb's red this season and then he sent off another three players in his next two games. They were Blackburn's El Hadji Diouf in a 3-1 defeat at Aston Villa and both Richard Stearman of Wolves and Wigan's Hendry Thomas in Wigan's 2-0 win at Molineux. He's continued his run of home players being more likely to get yellow cards over recent weeks but the total is still very much in favour of home players over the full season. Of those 106 yellow cards, 46 have gone to home team players with 57 to away team players. The other three came in last week's FA Cup semi-final at Wembley between Aston Villa and Chelsea. It proved to be a difficult game for Webb with one or two big decisions highlighted, none more so than a penalty he failed to award to Villa. The three yellow cards in the game all went to Chelsea players - Deco, John Obi Mikel and the fortunate not to be sent off John Terry. The assistant referees today are Darren Cann (Norfolk) and Mike Mullarkey (Devon). The fourth official is Football League referee Kevin Wright (Cambridgeshire) who last refereed Burnley in November 2006 in a home game against Birmingham.
