Wade Elliott signs for Birmingham

Burnley's Wade Elliott has left the club after over six years and has signed for Birmingham City. Elliott joined Burnley from Bournemouth in May 2005 on the same day as Garreth O'Connor. He quickly settled in and became a regular in the side. Probably his best season in a Burnley shirt was the 2007/08 season but his most memorable will be the one after when he ensured his name went into Burnley folklore by scoring the goal at Wembley to take us into the Premier League. He remained very much a regular at Burnley throughout that Premier League season and indeed until his former Bournemouth team mate Eddie Howe took over as manager. He didn't feature in the win at Watford in February and that brought an end to a run without missing a game, the previous game he'd missed being the 2-1 defeat at Preston in January 2009. Wade Elliott made a total of 282 appearances for Burnley and scored 23 goals, the last of which came just last week in the Carling Cup win over Barnet. There have been hints throughout the summer that he may be sold and there have certainly been enough clubs linked with him. For a while during the close season it was thought that both Southampton, the club he supports, and Portsmouth, managed by Steve Cotterill who brought him to Burnley, could be challenging for his signature. Nothing came of it but then, just last weekend, there were suggestions that he was wanted by Nottingham Forest. In the end it's Birmingham and they've landed him for an undisclosed fee on a two-year deal. Wade Elliott the Wembley goalscorer is the 11th of the 16 players on duty that day to leave Burnley. I'm sure he leaves Turf Moor with everyone's best wishes.
