Vokes wins 27th cap

Sam Vokes won his 27th full international cap for Wales tonight but it wasn't a good night for him and the Welsh as they went down to a 2-1 defeat in their World Cup qualifier against FYR Macedonia in Skopje. Sam Vokes has now won 27 caps for Wales

Manager Chris Coleman made it after missing the flight with the players having mislaid his passport and he named Vokes as one of the substitutes.

They fell behind midway through the first half but equalised with an Aaron Ramsey penalty. They fell behind again with ten minutes to go but it wasn't until the 85th minute that Vokes was introduced, coming on for David Vaughan the Sunderland midfielder.

It wasn't a good night for Northern Ireland either but Danny Lafferty sat this one out suspended. They looked as though they might cause an upset when they led Portugal 2-1 at Windsor Park with goals from Gareth McAuley and Jamie Ward, and with Portugal having been reduced to ten men just before half time with the dismissal of Helder Postiga.

It all went wrong in the last half hour. Right on the hour the numbers were levelled when Chris Brunt received his second yellow card and was sent off. Kyle Lafferty, returning from a suspension, was introduced as a substitute on 67 minutes and within a minute Cristiano Ronaldo scored the first of a hat trick that gave Portugal a 4-2 win.

Lafferty stayed for 13 minutes before receiving a straight red card for a dangerous challenge but by then it was 3-2 in Portugal's favour with the last goal coming three minutes later.

Martin Paterson, the other ex-Claret involved, played the entire ninety minutes.

Two other former Clarets, both former loan players, were involved tonight. Gary Cahill was in the England team that beat Moldova 4-1 and Alex Kačaniklić helped Sweden to a 2-1 win against the Republic of Ireland at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin.

Gabor Kiraly was in the Hungary squad but was an unused substitute as Bolton's Adam Bogdan played in goal in their 3-0 defeat in Romania.

The INTERNATIONALS feature has been updated with all tonight's appearances.
