He came on as a substitute at the start of the second half, replacing Cardiff's Craig Bellamy, with the Welsh already 1-0 up through a Gareth Bale goal.
Within seven minutes of coming on he'd scored his fifth international goal, heading home a Bale cross to double Wales' lead. Austria pulled one goal back but the game ended at 2-1 for the home side.
Burnley team mate Danny Lafferty was also in international action and played in Northern Ireland's 0-0 draw against Malta in Ta'Qali. Lafferty was winning his third international cap and played the full 90 minutes in a game that gave Northern Ireland their fourth successive draw.
One other Burnley player was on international duty last night but Dane Richards travelled to Mexico without getting any action. He was an unused substitute as Jamaica won a point in their first round four game in the World Cup qualifiers against Mexico in the Azteca Stadium.
In the other two games played in the group, Panama and Costa Rica drew 2-2 in Panama City whilst Honduras pulled off the result of the night, beating USA 2-1 in San Pedro Sula, this after Tottenham's Clint Dempsey had given the Americans the lead.
Two former Clarets were on international duty last night. Gary Cahill played in England's 2-1 friendly win against Brazil at Wembley and Steven Fletcher won his 11th Scottish cap as they won 1-0 against Estonia at Aberdeen's Pittodrie Stadium in Gordon Strachan's first game in charge.
The INTERNATIONALS feature has now been updated.
