Tykes stun Clarets in cup thriller

The last time Burnley left South Yorkshire having beaten the Tykes was way back in 1932, and they tasted defeat again in a five-goal thriller.[LNB]Barnsley fell behind to a Steven Fletcher strike but hit back 60 seconds later through Jon Macken and took the lead in first-half stoppage time with a spectacular strike from Anderson De Silva.[LNB]Burnley fought back with a goal created by Fernando Guerrero and scored by Chris Eagles, but Hugo Colace scored a bullet header with 15 minutes remaining to settle the tie.[LNB]The opening was scrappy with a series of niggling fouls but Fletcher sent Guerrero racing down the left touchline in the 12th minute.[LNB]The Ecuadorian, one of Clarets boss Owen Coyle's six changes, cut inside but, just as he looked to cap a fine run, the outstretched leg of defender Darren Moore sent the ball wide of David Preece's goal.[LNB]From the resulting corner Rob Kozluk managed to clear a Fletcher header off the line.[LNB]But the deadlock was broken in the 22nd minute when Fletcher held off defender Darren Moore following a Brian Jensen goal-kick before powering the ball past Preece from the edge of the box.[LNB]But just a minute later Macken popped up to steer home into an empty net after Iain Hume had hit the post with a header from a fine Kozluk cross.[LNB]Burnley striker Martin Paterson had already been carried off on a stretcher when Jensen too went off injured.[LNB]Substitute goalkeeper Diego Penny was immediately called into action as Hume was sent racing through and went down as he tried to round the goalkeeper.[LNB]Referee Mark Clattenberg blew his whistle and although the home fans initially thought he had given a penalty, he had actually blown for a free-kick the other way.[LNB]Eight minutes of injury time were signalled and with six gone Barnsley took the lead for the first time.[LNB]Midfielder Adam Hammill pounced on a loose pass in midfield before driving at the Burnley defence. Richard Eckersley did well to halt his progress but the ball fell to Da Silva who fired into the top corner with the outside of his foot from 25 yards.[LNB]Hume tested Penny with a curling effort seconds into the second half but he always looked comfortable in dealing with it.[LNB]The visitors looked to apply some early pressure with wingers Guerrero and Eagles instigating much of their attacking work and Burnley equalised in the 52nd minute.[LNB]The ball was fed wide and Guerrero, whose pace troubled the Tykes all night, came up with a fantastic take on the touchline which saw him leave Kozluk in his wake.[LNB]He raced towards the byline and laid it on a plate for the unmarked Eagles to tap home from close range.[LNB]The home side upped the tempo as they went about trying to settle the tie.[LNB]And they did so when Colace ghosted in to head into the top corner with quarter of an hour remaining.[LNB]The moved began with De Silva breaking down the right at speed and producing a great cross into the box which was met at speed by the Barnsley midfielder.[LNB]Preece denied Fletcher twice late on as the Clarets crashed out of the cup competition they enjoyed a fine run in last season.[LNB][LNB][LNB]
