The now 34-year-old Gray looked all set to drop into League Two with Bradford City ahead of the new season. They were very confident that the signing would go through until their hopes were jeopardised with interest from a Championship club.
It's now been confirmed that the Championship club in question is Leeds, where he started his career, with manager Neil Warnock keen to add him to his striker options.
Gray played only occasionally for Leeds, but his 29 appearances, in which he failed to score a goal, did include the 1996 Coca-Cola Cup Final at Wembley against Aston Villa which they lost 3-0.
He didn't play up front then. It was at Bradford City where they converted him to a striker and he had a productive period there before moving on.
They'd hoped he was on his way back there but the lure of his first club, the club he supports, the club where both his dad and uncle played with distinction, could be too strong and he could opt to link up again with Neil Warnock for whom he played at Sheffield United.
