Turf Moor debut for referee Adcock
James Adcock, from Long Eaton, who refereed our Capital One cup tie at Swindon earlier in the season, referees at Turf Moor for the first time tomorrow when we face Bristol City.
Adcock won promotion to the Football League for the beginning of the 2011/12 season at the age of 27. He started refereeing at a young age, following in the footsteps of his dad who was himself a Football League assistant referee for many years.
He'd been allocated one Football League game in the previous season but I bet he hadn't. It was the League Two game between Macclesfield and Wycombe at Moss Rose in February 2011 and all hell broke loose during stoppage time.
It started when Macclesfield's Ricky Sappleton kicked out at Stuart Lewis of Wycombe. Several players joined in a brawl and left Adcock sending off Sappleton, his team mate Emile Sinclair and Wycombe's Dave Winfield.
Macclesfield subsequently fined every one of their players involved plus the manager and assistant manager. Chairman Mike Rance said: "Clearly the majority of the participants on both sides were attempting to calm rather than exacerbate the situation, but we have concluded the actions of Macclesfield players on the pitch could not be condoned."
After that start he must have wondered what faced him. He's never sent off three players in a game since although last season, on two occasions, he did send off two players.
Games in the Championship are still the exception for him. He was awarded just one game at this level last season, Barnsley's 3-1 home defeat to Millwall, and this season has so far refereed seven Championship games.
That's seven out of a total of 31 games in which there have been 87 yellow and five red cards, three of which have come in his last five games. Of those 87 yellow cards, 33 have gone to home team players and 34 to away team players.
One of the red cards came in the Championship, and that was the dismissal of Tom Lees of Leeds last week in their 3-0 defeat at Ipswich, a red card that saw former Leeds boss Neil Warnock accusing his player of letting everyone down.
Adcock has refereed since, the League One game between Crewe and Preston on Easter Monday. All of Mark Ellis, Abdul Osman and Ryan Colclough of Crewe were yellow carded along with Graham Cummins of Preston.
Other than him missing a clear penalty at 2-1, I can't recall much of his performance at Swindon; I think there was too much concern regarding our performance that night.
It scored him a rating of 61.00 in RATE THE REF which sees him in 41st place in the table.
The assistant referees are Philip Dermott (Lancashire) and David Storrie (West Yorkshire). The fourth official is Anthony Tankard (South Yorkshire).
