Toronto want to keep Eckersley

Richard Eckersley has just spent the 2011 season playing Major League Soccer for Canadian club Toronto FC, and they would like him back next season.

Eckersley joined them in April. A loan contract at Bury was cancelled to enable to the transfer to go through, and he's due back at Burnley in January once the transfer window opens to enable him to make the return.

He's done well, to the extent that talks have already started to extend his stay according to Toronto's Director of Player Development Paul Mariner for whom Eckersley played on loan at Plymouth during the 2009/10 season.

"We are trying our best to re-sign him," Mariner said yesterday. "I have known Richard for a long time and he is tailor made for the league. I was out with dinner with him last night and we had a good chat. It is progressing really well. I don't want to say it is 100 per cent yet but it is progressing very well for us."

Eckersley joined Burnley in the summer of 2009 following promotion to the Premier League. He signed a four year contract meaning he's still got over a season and a half as a Burnley player.

He was on the bench for the opening Premier League game at Stoke but has not featured in League football for Burnley with his only games coming in the Carling and FA Cups.

He's impressed in the MLS although a hamstring injury kept him out at the end of the season. His signing seems to be the big priority for them ahead of the 2012 season which starts in early March.
