Top five drop points in midweek games

29 September 2010 23:06
None of the teams in the top five at the start of yesterday were able to win their games last night, and that allowed Norwich, Reading and Burnley to move closer to the top after they all won. The top two, QPR and Cardiff, were both held to 0-0 draws but behind them the next three clubs, Watford, Ipswich and Leeds were all beaten, two of them at home.Leeds were involved in the most amazing of games. They went a goal down to Preston but soon recovered and looked set to take a healthy, and what looked a match winning, 4-1 lead into half time. But Preston pulled one back before the break and incredibly scored another four in the second half to win it 6-4 with three of the goals coming from the less than mobile Jon Parkin. That result has seen them climb to 20th in the table with Crystal Palace, Bristol City and Leicester now occupying the relegation places. There are no problems at bottom club Leicester despite recording only one win all season. Milan Mandaric has given manager Paulo Sousa a vote of confidence. I wonder how long that will give him at the Crisp Bowl?Last night they fought back at Norwich to 4-3 but then had Matty Fryatt sent off. He'd come on as a substitute and scored twice and went to get the ball from the back of the net after his second. A Norwich player got there ahead of him so Fryatt opted to throw a punch at him and then kick him. The next thing he saw was Peter Walton's red card.Wes Hoolihan scored a good goal in that game and one of two from Kris Commons was another good striker. For me though, the goal of the midweek fixtures was Chris Eagles' first for the Clarets, a top team goal.Portsmouth won again, this time beating Bristol City at Fratton Park, and like Preston are out of the bottom three. I would say well done, but I don't wish them well and the sooner they are back in the bottom three the better it will be.Swansea won away for the first time; I believe Scott Sinclair let everyone know the result via a tweet. It leaves just six clubs without an away win. They are Barnsley, Middlesbrough, Portsmouth, Crystal Palace and Leicester from the bottom half of the table. There's just one team in the top half without a win on the road, and the sooner that happens the better. This Saturday would be a good time. The midweek results are below along with the usual stats, the leading goalscorers, the disciplinary records of each club and the last fixtures before the second international break. The Midweek ResultsTuesday 28th SeptemberBurnley 4 Hull 0Nottingham Forest 1 Sheffield United 1Cardiff 0 Crystal Palace 0Portsmouth 3 Bristol City 1Coventry 2 Doncaster 1QPR 0 Millwall 0Derby 3 Middlesbrough 1Reading 1 Ipswich 0Leeds 4 Preston 6Scunthorpe 0 Barnsley 0Norwich 4 Leicester 3Watford 2 Swansea 3The Midweek StatsBiggest winBurnley 4-0 v Hull (home)Total goals scored40 (24 home - 16 away)Player scoring most goals3 - Jon Parkin (Preston)Highest Attendance25,091 - Norwich v LeicesterLowest Attendance5,421 - Scunthorpe v BarnsleyTotal Yellow Cards32Total Red Cards2Most cards in a gameReading v Ipswich (5Y 2R) - Phil CrossleyThe leading scorers (league only)8Jamie Mackie (QPR)7Chris Iwelumo (Burnley)6Danny Graham (Watford)5Jay Bothroyd (Cardiff)Kris Commons (Derby) - includes 1 penaltyJon Parkin (Preston)Davide Somma (Leeds)4James Coppinger (Doncaster)Stephen Dobbie (Swansea)Adam Hammill (Barnsley)Heidar Helguson (QPR) - includes 3 penaltiesJimmy Kebe (Reading)Andy King (Leicester)Lewis McGugan (Nottingham Forest) - includes 1 penaltySteve Morison (Millwall) - includes 1 penaltyScott Sinclair (Swansea)Marvin Sordell (Watford)Hat Tricks (league only)11th Sep3 - Chris Iwelumo - BURNLEY v Preston14th Sep3 - James Coppinger - DONCASTER v Norwich14th Sep3 - James Vaughan - CRYSTAL PALACE v Portsmouth28th Sep3 - Jon Parkin - Leeds v PRESTONDisciplinary Record (all domestic games)ClubYRClubYRBarnsley160Middlesbrough170Bristol City121Millwall162Burnley232Norwich120Cardiff70Nottingham Forest140Coventry171Portsmouth151Crystal Palace183Preston241Derby160QPR110Doncaster111Reading173Hull150Scunthorpe101Ipswich172Sheffield United132Leeds171Swansea211Leicester132Watford120The Next FixturesSaturday 2nd OctoberBarnsley v CardiffLeicester v ScunthorpeBristol City v NorwichMiddlesbrough v PortsmouthCrystal Palace v QPRMillwall v BurnleyDoncaster v Nottingham ForestPreston v ReadingHull v CoventrySheffield United v WatfordIpswich v LeedsSwansea v Derby
