Stuart Gray back in the Championship

Stuart Gray, who was first team coach at Burnley from January 2010 until the end of the 2010/11 season, has returned to coach in the Championship by joining the coaching staff of struggling Sheffield Wednesday.

Gray, in effect, replaced Steve Davis at Burnley, coming in to work alongside then new manager Brian Laws and his assistant Russ Wilcox. He carried out that role for a year and then stood in as caretaker manager following Laws' dismissal, returning to his first team coaching role with the appointment of new manager Eddie Howe.

Howe prefers to work with Jason Tindall and without a first team coach and so Gray became surplus to requirements and left in May 2011 but was quickly back in work with Portsmouth as first team coach under Steve Cotterill at Fratton Park.

Again he enjoyed a short spell as caretaker when Cotterill moved to Nottingham Forest and then worked for Michael Appleton before being made redundant as the administrators cut costs.

After a few months out of the game he's returned to work for Dave Jones at Sheffield Wednesday and the two are certainly not strangers having worked alongside each other for seven years at Southampton and Wolves.

Jones said on confirming the appointment: "I've brought Stuart in because he's an older head than the coaches I have, he has a vast amount of experience. He'll become part of the coaching team and everybody at the club will benefit from his experience and knowledge.

"I have worked with Stuart for around seven years and that played a big part in my decision to bring him to the club. It underlines my philosophy of never standing still and always looking to build."
