Stuart Attwell to referee at Turf Moor for the first time

19 April 2013 16:51
Former Premier League referee Stuart Atwell will referee tomorrow's televised game against Cardiff City. It will be his sixth Burnley game but the previous five have all been away from home.

Attwell, form Nuneaton, first refereed us in our Premier League season, at both Manchester City and Aston Villa. In the following two seasons he was the man in charge of the wins at Portsmouth and in January this year refereed our 2-0 win at Millwall.

Controversy followed him round from the minute he joined the Select Group. He ruined a tribute to Sir Bobby Robson at his old club West Brom by starting play as the message of condolence was being read, there was the now infamous phantom goal at Watford and he was called a liar by one Premier League referee.

That was just the tip of the iceberg and eventually enough was enough for his bosses and he was removed from that list and hasn't refereed in the Premier League since January of last year.

The controversy has continued since, although it's been lower profile because of it being out of the spotlight of the Premier League. He was reported to have had something of a nightmare in the Barnsley v Sheffield Wednesday game in December. He allowed a goal to Wednesday after a clear foul on the goalkeeper and he allowed former Claret Stephen Foster to remain on the pitch after a challenge that was so far over the top it was reported that it would have done Harry Cripps (Millwall's hard man from the 1970s) proud.

In truth, we've been reasonably fortunate with him and there's been little too controversial in the games when he's refereed us.

This season he's refereed 42 games, including 16 in the Championship. There have been 122 yellow cards in those games and three red cards including that of Leicester's Wes Morgan in the 3rd minute of their recent 1-0 home defeat against Millwall. 52 of those yellow cards have gone to home players and 70 to away players.

His last game was Crewe's 2-1 home defeat against Doncaster. The only player yellow carded was Crewe's Brad Inman.

Attwell is 42nd in the RATE THE REF Table with a rating of 61.03 out of 100.

The assistant referees are Steven Copeland (Merseyside) and Daniel Meeson (Staffordshire). The fourth official is Paul Tierney (Wigan). He booked the wrong player in our cup tie at Barnsley, leading to the incorrect dismissal of Brian Stock, and such was his performance that day, in his first Burnley game, that he's easily found in the RATE THE REF Table. He's third from bottom with a rating of just 34.
