Speed gets Blades' job

It's hardly been a secret since Kevin Blackwell was dumped on Saturday evening, just after Sheffield United's second league game of the season, a 3-0 home reverse against Neil Warnock's Queens Park Rangers. Coach, Gary Speed, was summoned to a meeting with chairman Kevin McCabe and chief executive Trevor Birch. It wasn't the short trip to Bramall Lane however. Speed had to travel to La Manga in Spain for the meeting at which he agreed to be the new boss. The appointment has been confirmed this afternoon, and it has also been confirmed that former Burnley assistant manager Sam Ellis will remain in his position at Sheffield United despite speculation this morning that he had followed Blackwell out of the club.Since leaving Turf Moor, Ellis has worked with Blackwell at Leeds, Luton and Sheffield United as well as a short period on Tony Pulis' coaching staff at Stoke.Speed, who has worked for Blackwell for the last two and a half years, has been given a deal until the end of the 2012/13 season and will be in charge for the first time this Sunday when Sheffield United travel to Middlesbrough for their Championship game.
