Sharp will be signing number three

Hull City midfielder Dean Marney was the first and he was quickly followed by Chris Iwelumo of Wolves. Now it is looking very likely that Sheffield United striker Billy Sharp will be the third summer signing for the Clarets. Brian Laws - set to sign Sharp for the second timeThe Sharp links have been circulating for quite some time with strong suggestions that he would become a Burnley player once home from his honeymoon next week. That now looks to be almost certain with Burnley having fought off opposition from both Doncaster and Leeds, amongst other clubs, for a player who has failed to establish himself at Sheffield United. He started his career there, but after a successful loan with Rushden & Diamonds he was snapped up by then Scunthorpe boss Brian Laws. It's hard to imagine he made too many better signings there with Sharp rewarding him with no less than 56 goals in 93 appearances.By the end of his second season at Scunthorpe Nigel Adkins had taken over from Laws and that summer, despite their promotion, Sharp was sold back to Sheffield United for a fee reported to be £2 million, although the Blades were entitled to some of that back due to a sell on clause. It was Bryan Robson who signed him back, although for much of his time since the manager at Bramall Lane has been Kevin Blackwell who hasn't give him much game time. He's scored just 13 goals for them in the three seasons but he found his goalscoring touch last season again with 15 in 35 games during a loan at Doncaster. He's now scored a total of 93 career goals, with all but six of those coming in the league, and that includes two hat tricks, one for Rushden & Diamonds against Boston and the other for Sheffield United against QPR.After last season's loan Doncaster were keen to keep him and had an offer turned down. Leeds were definitely another club linked with him with reports at one time saying they'd beaten us to his signature. That doesn't appear to be the likely result now with Burnley believed to have got their man and Sharp expected to sign for Laws for the second time in five years.
