Second Burnley game for referee Hooper

Wiltshire referee Simon Hooper gets his second Burnley game at Charlton Athletic tomorrow just about five miles from the venue for his first Burnley game, that being Millwall in October 2011.

Hooper was appointed as a Football League referee for the 2008/09 season and got his first Championship game in January 2009 which was Norwich's 4-0 win against Barnsley at Carrow Road.

It's only in the last couple of years that he's been getting a decent number of Championship games and this season 12 of his 28 games have been at our level.

He was involved in just once controversial incident at Millwall last season. John Marquis went down in a challenge with David Edgar and immediately claimed for a penalty. Hooper, rightly, yellow carded him for diving.

It was one of five yellow cards in the game but overall he's not a referee who overuses that particular card. However, he has had something of a reputation for being too eager with his red card.

That seems to have abated this season. To add to the 75 yellow cards there have been just four red cards in his 28 games. Of the 75 yellow cards there have been 38 for home players and 37 for away players.

Three of those four red cards have come in his twelve Championship games. He sent off Derby's Jake Buxton in a 3-0 loss at Peterborough, Nikola Zigic of Birmingham in their 3-1 defeat at Bolton and our weeks ago he dismissed Brighton's Ashley Barnes as they went down 3-1 at Sheffield Wednesday.

Hooper's last game was at Dean Court for Bournemouth's 2-0 defeat against Coventry on Tuesday. There were six yellow cards in that game; Bournemouth's Harry Arter and Matt Ritchie and Coventry's James Bailey, Gary McSheffrey, William Edjenguele and Cody McDonald.

That one game at Millwall last season sees him in 12th place in the RATE THE REF Table with a rating of 75.00 out of 100.

The assistant referees tomorrow are Neil Radford (Worcestershire) and Thomas Ramsey (Essex). The fourth official is Antony Coggins (Oxfordshire).
