Scunthorpe take the honours

11 April 2011 11:14
It was the weekend when the top clubs met, as Reading won at Forest, Swansea beat Norwich and Millwall beat Leeds, but the honours on Saturday just had to go Scunthorpe's way as they came from behind to beat top of the league QPR. It's often said that any team can beat any other in the Championship but for Scunthorpe, who started the day bottom of the league, to beat leaders QPR was a massive shock, certainly after Rob Hulse had given QPR an early lead.It was a home debut for new manager Alan Knill. He'd seen his side absolutely hammered at Norwich the week before but had spoken a few home truths in the week and they came back to hit four goals and in doing so climbed two places and left themselves, of the bottom three, with the best chance of catching Crystal Palace.Sheffield United were the only losers in that bottom three. Whilst Preston were bringing a point back from Fratton Park they were beaten with an 89th minute goal at home to Middlesbrough, a result which now should surely ensure Middlesbrough's safety.Up at the top, an incredible fixture list saw six of the top eight against each other and the results have certainly made a difference to the promotion picture. We can all but forget QPR now, despite this defeat, but Norwich started the day in second place and four points clear of third. That lead is now just one point as they went down at Swansea. It's Swansea and Cardiff, with Cardiff in third place on goal difference, who are right behind them in that chase for the second automatic place.Next come Reading. At the beginning of March they hardly looked play off contenders but six wins out of six has catapulted them into fifth place with a late goal giving them their latest win at Nottingham Forest. As Reading have stormed forward, Forest have declined. That's nine without a win now for them and they sit four points outside the play offs just seven weeks after they held second place. It's hardly going to be a battle of the in form teams tomorrow night at the City Ground. That fixture, along with the other fixtures for tomorrow are shown below with the latest results, the leading goalscorers and each club's disciplinary record. The Weekend ResultsSaturday 9th AprilBarnsley 4 Bristol City 2Nottingham Forest 3 Reading 4Derby 2 Coventry 2Portsmouth 1 Preston 1Doncaster 1 Cardiff 3Scunthorpe 4 QPR 1Ipswich 2 Crystal Palace 1Sheffield United 1 Middlesbrough 2Leicester 4 Burnley 0Swansea 3 Norwich 0Millwall 3 Leeds 2Watford 1 Hull 2The Weekend StatsBiggest winLeicester 4-0 v Burnley (home)Total goals scored49 (29 home - 20 away)Player scoring most goals2Josh Carson (Ipswich)Jason Koumas (Cardiff)Highest Attendance25,546 - Derby v CoventryLowest Attendance6,061 - Scunthorpe v QPRTotal Yellow Cards29Total Red Cards0Most cards in a gameBarnsley v Bristol City (5Y) - Nigel MillerThe leading scorers (league only)22Danny Graham (Watford) - includes 1 penalty20Shane Long (Reading) - includes 5 penalties19Grant Holt (Norwich) - includes 3 penalties18Luciano Becchio (Leeds)16Jay Bothroyd (Cardiff) - includes 1 penaltyMax Gradel (Leeds) - includes 2 penaltiesScott Sinclair (Swansea) - includes 5 penalties15Bill Sharp (Doncaster) - includes 4 penaltiesSteve Morison (Millwall) - includes 1 penaltyAdel Taarabt (QPR) - includes 6 penalties13Kris Commons (Derby) - includes 2 penaltiesAndy King (Leicester)12Heidar Helguson (QPR) - includes 5 penaltiesLewis McGugan (Nottingham Forest) - includes 3 penaltiesJay Rodriguez (Burnley)11Iain Hume (Preston)Chris Iwelumo (Burnley)David Nugent (Portsmouth)Brett Pitman (Bristol City) - includes 3 penaltiesDavide Somma (Leeds)Hat Tricks (league only)11th Sep3 - Chris Iwelumo - BURNLEY v Preston14th Sep3 - James Coppinger - DONCASTER v Norwich14th Sep3 - James Vaughan - CRYSTAL PALACE v Portsmouth28th Sep3 - Jon Parkin - Leeds v PRESTON30th Oct3 - Jonny Howson - Scunthorpe v LEEDS13th Nov3 - Luciano Becchio - LEEDS v Bristol City27th Nov3 - Grant Holt - NORWICH v Leeds28th Dec3 - Wes Hoolahan - NORWICH v Sheffield United1st Jan3 - Jason Puncheon - MILLWALL v Crystal Palace5th Feb3 - Matt Fryatt - Scunthorpe v HULL15th Feb3 - Connor Wickham - Doncaster v IPSWICH2nd Apr3 - Grant Holt - NORWICH v Scunthorpe2nd Apr3 - Simeon Jackson - NORWICH v Scunthorpe2nd Apr3 - Yakubu - Middlesbrough v LEICESTERDisciplinary Record (all domestic games)ClubYRClubYRBarnsley602Middlesbrough561Bristol City522Millwall605Burnley754Norwich653Cardiff521Nottingham Forest632Coventry625Portsmouth737Crystal Palace706Preston825Derby672QPR626Doncaster423Reading634Hull722Scunthorpe473Ipswich644Sheffield United6610Leeds774Swansea582Leicester493Watford472The Next FixturesTuesday 12th AprilBarnsley v QPRNottingham Forest v BurnleyDerby v LeedsPortsmouth v CoventryDoncaster v PrestonScunthorpe v ReadingIpswich v MiddlesbroughSheffield United v CardiffLeicester v Crystal PalaceSwansea v HullMillwall v Bristol CityWatford v Norwich
