Scunthorpe take the honours on night of strange results

15 September 2010 22:52
Barnsley 5 Leeds 2, Sheffield United 0 Scunthorpe 4 - just two of the unexpected results in last night's first midweek games of the season in the Championship. It was the night when Nottingham Forest came from behind at Preston to win for the first time this season and Leicester did likewise in beating Cardiff at the Crisp Bowl. For Cardiff it was a first defeat of the season and they were not the only first time losers; Ipswich were beaten for the first time, going down at home to league leaders QPR who were the only side in the top nine at the start of the day to go on and win.QPR are now the only unbeaten club, sitting three points clear at the top, and down at the other end of the table isn't it good news to see Portsmouth still without a win. The club that really shouldn't be in business are the only club with a zero in the win column and a point behind Preston who themselves haven't recorded a solitary point other than their home win against Portsmouth. It was certainly a night for goalscorers. Chris Iwelumo scored the first Championship hat trick on Saturday in our win against Preston, but it didn't remain the only hat trick for long. Last night James Vaughan, on loan from Everton, hit three for Palace in their 4-1 win over Pompey and James Coppinger got all three in Doncaster's win against Norwich.Besides those two, there were five other players who scored two goals, including Chris Dagnall for Scunthorpe. I mention his name because he scored perhaps the most fortunate goal of the night in what surely was the result of the night.Without a manager after Nigel Adkins opted for a move to the South Coast, Scunthorpe turned up at Bramall Lane with Ian Baraclough in temporary charge and saw off the home side 4-0. Dagnall it was who opened the scoring, but how on earth he got away with the handball leading up to the goal is anyone's guess.Just as the goal of the day at weekend came in our game, even though Big Chris himself thought his third goal was the best, saw the best one of the night last night came in our game too, unfortunately Middlesbrough's winner. The stats are below, along with the Championship's leading goalscorers, the disciplinary records of each club and the next fixtures. The Midweek ResultsTuesday 14th SeptemberBarnsley 5 Leeds 2Leicester 2 Cardiff 1Bristol City 0 Watford 2Middlesbrough 2 Burnley 1Crystal Palace 4 Portsmouth 1Millwall 0 Reading 0Doncaster 3 Norwich 1Preston 1 Nottingham Forest 2Hull 2 Derby 0Sheffield United 0 Scunthorpe 4Ipswich 0 QPR 3Swansea 2 Coventry 1The MidWeek StatsBiggest winScunthorpe 4-0 v Sheffield United (away)Total goals scored39 (21 home - 18 away)Player scoring most goals3James Coppinger (Doncaster)James Vaughan (Crystal Palace)Highest Attendance20,510 - Leicester v CardiffLowest Attendance9,314 - Doncaster v NorwichTotal Yellow Cards32Total Red Cards0Most cards in a gameMillwall v Reading (5Y) - David PhillipsThe leading scorers (league only)6Jamie Mackie (QPR)5Chris Iwelumo (Burnley)4Jay Bothroyd (Cardiff)James Coppinger (Doncaster)Heidar Helguson (QPR) - includes 3 penaltiesAndy King (Leicester)Steve Morison (Millwall) - includes 1 penalty3Dexter Blackstock (Nottingham Forest) - includes 1 penaltyDanny Graham (Watford)Adam Hammill (Barnsley)Davide Somma (Leeds)Marvin Sordell (Watford)James Vaughan (Crystal Palace)Hat Tricks (league only)11th Sep3 - Chris Iwelumo - BURNLEY v Preston14th Sep3 - James Coppinger - DONCASTER v Norwich14th Sep3 - James Vaughan - CRYSTAL PALACE v PortsmouthDisciplinary Record (all domestic games)ClubYRClubYRBarnsley110Middlesbrough110Bristol City101Millwall91Burnley152Norwich70Cardiff30Nottingham Forest100Coventry121Portsmouth70Crystal Palace132Preston171Derby110QPR80Doncaster81Reading110Hull100Scunthorpe81Ipswich121Sheffield United91Leeds130Swansea121Leicester60Watford80The Next FixturesFriday 17th SeptemberDoncaster v Leeds.Saturday 18th SeptemberBarnsley v DerbyMiddlesbrough v ReadingBristol City v CoventryMillwall v WatfordCrystal Palace v BurnleyPreston v NorwichHull v Nottingham Forest (17:20)Sheffield United v PortsmouthIpswich v CardiffSwansea v ScunthorpeLeicester v QPR.
