Royals boss aims to scale mountain
Owen Coyle's side take a 1-0 lead into the second leg at the Madejski Stadium on Tuesday night and ordinarily Coppell's side would be well placed to progress to a Wembley showdown with either Preston or Sheffield United.
However, Coppell's side have not won at home since they beat champions Wolves on January 27 - a run of eight games which has already derailed one route to promotion to the Premier League and could now end another.
Coppell said: "In a normal season I'd say it's delicately poised but given our recent home form we have a hell of a mountain to climb.
"I'm not going to pretend otherwise.
"We know we've got a job to do and that we've got to do things a little bit differently on Tuesday.
"We've just got to try and win. We can't do anything other than go flat out, try and win the game and see what happens.
"It's all to play for though. Burnley once again showed their resilience in the first leg, they are a hard-working side and they stuck in there.
"But we know we've got a job to do which is to get a victory at home."
Coppell will be without defender Andre Bikey after his sending-off in the closing stages of Saturday's defeat at Turf Moor while top scorer Kevin Doyle is a major doubt with an Achilles injury.
Midfielder Jay Tabb - who came close to firing the Royals into the lead with a powerful drive - believes the defeat in Lancashire did not change the tie as an elusive home win was always needed.
Tabb tasted play-off defeat during his time with Brentford but is confident that he can come out on top this time around.
He said: "We always had to win at home and that hasn't changed.
"People have asked about our home record but it's just no concern. There's no point looking back and the pitch is better than it's been for a long time.
"Forget what's happened before, this is a great opportunity to get to Wembley.
"If we win 2-0 we're there.
"I've played in play-off games before and there's not always much football played, it can be about passion and heart and we matched them for that.
"The penalty was hard to take but nobody is too down. Now we'll recover well and do the business at home."
