Although the Clarets have issued a statement declaring that there won't be an announcement regarding Owen Coyle's future for the next 24 hours, it is still widely expected that he will be installed at Bolton by the end of the week having opened talks with the club on Monday.

With thoughts now turning to the possible identity of his replacement at Turf Moor, Phelan has been touted as a surprise contender.

According to The Daily Mail, Phelan 'is expected to go head-to-head with Sir Alex's son Darren Ferguson and Peter Reid, No 2 at Stoke, for Coyle's job.'

Despite being Sir Alex Ferguson's assistant for the past two years at Old Trafford, the Mail declares that he 'has no chance of succeeding the Scot at United.'
