PFA Fans' Player of the Month Contenders: Championship

24 January 2014 09:32

David Nugent claimed the bragging rights in the battle of the best two strikers in the Championship with the winning goal in leaders Leicester’s recent victory over Leeds.

Former Fan Player of the Month winner Ross McCormack has been rewarded for his goalscoring exploits this season by being given the captain’s armband.

But Nugent was the hero of the hour as he scored an 87th minute winner at Elland Road to secure the Foxes’ sixth successive league win, taking his tally for the season to 15.

McCormack still leads the way in the goalscoring stakes in the Championship (17) and he will continue to play an important role as Leeds look to resurrect their season.

Burnley’s deadly duo Danny Ings and Sam Vokes continue to keep the Clarets in the promotion mix. Vokes has recently signed a new deal whilst Ings is being linked with a number of Premier clubs.

Ings has scored 21 goals so far this season and that could be the key of the door to Liverpool or Fulham, if the usual round of January transfer rumours are to be believed.

Charlie Austin is still amongst the goals for promotion-chasing QPR and his brace in the win against Huddersfield made it 13 for the season.

Chris Martin has been in fine form for Derby, but it was new on-loan signing Patrick Bamford who was the hero against Brighton as the Rams got back to winning ways after a poor run.

Jordan Rhodes is still up there with the leading scorers in the Championship, and Adam Le Fondre staked a strong claim for player of the month with a hat-trick in Reading’s 7-1 win over Bolton.

Barnsley may still be struggling at the bottom of the table, but returning manager Danny Wilson is certainly seeing the best of top scorer Chris O’Grady whose two goals in the victory over Blackpool ended the Tykes’ seven-match winless run.

Vote now for your favourite in the Championship as we count down to the end of the month.
