Paterson ruled out until December
The Northern Ireland international suffered cartilage damage in Tuesday's 3-2 Carling Cup loss at Oakwell which necessitated an operation.
And after going under the knife Paterson, 22, will likely be unavailable for Owen Coyle until around Christmas, coming as a further blow after midfielder Chris McCann was ruled out for a similar period earlier this week.
The Clarets revealed on their website: "Exploratory surgery has shown a tear in the cartilage that could now keep last season's leading goalscorer out of action until December."
