Burnley midfielder James O'Connor had to be taken to hospital after being knocked unconscious following a clash of heads with West Brom's Paul McShane during the Clarets' 3-2 win at Turf Moor.

McShane was sent off following the 45th-minute incident, which led to O'Connor being carried off the pitch and given oxygen, before being taken to hospital as a precaution.

Boss Steve Cotterill said: "James was out for two to three minutes and hopefully he will be okay. He is in hospital and they will keep him in overnight for observation."

Match-winner Chris McCann added: "The victory was overshadowed by what happened to James.

"He was in a bit of a bad way at half-time, but what happened to him gave us extra motivation."
