Nugent - My future is in the Premier League

David Nugent has every intention of staying in the Premier League - with or without Burnley.

Although Nugent's loan spell with the Clarets from relegated Portsmouth has three games to run, the 24-year-old has already written off his prospects of a south coast return.

"Being contracted to Portsmouth, it was hard to take when they were relegated," said Nugent. "But I'm already looking to the future, and next year I don't see myself there."

He added: "I've not spoken to anyone. I just want to stay out of the way for now, focus on Burnley and keeping them in the Premier League. That is my main objective, so we will see what happens.

"I'm going to wait until the end of the season to decide my future, but I don't think it will be at Portsmouth. I'll probably be looking for a new club in the summer.

"If Burnley stay up I'd love to stay, but if they go down then I don't see myself staying. I've got to stay in the Premier League to further my career.

"I thank Burnley for giving me the chance to play in the Premier League, which is the best in the world, and that's where I want to be."

Boss Brian Laws can appreciate Nugent's desire to remain in the top flight as he said: "I don't think what he has said surprises anybody.

"If we stay up then we would love him to be here. He enjoys it and wants to be part of it.

"But he wants to stay in the Premier League because he is a player of Premier League quality."
