North End are favourites for Caldwell

Wigan, Portsmouth and Preston have all been linked with moves for Steven Caldwell but Preston now look clear favourites to land the former Burnley captain. Caldwell was released by the Clarets at the end of the 2009/10 season, a season that had seen him restricted with injury. He was immediately linked with Wigan, a club where his brother Gary plays, but that one never seemed likely to come off. With the appointment of Steve Cotterill as manager of Portsmouth came the inevitable link. Caldwell, ons his departure from Burnley, had spoken highly of the man who brought him to Turf Moor and a reunion with him on the south coast was always a possibility and possibly only the geography put paid to that.Preston were the other club almost immediately linked with him, but because of the winding up order, were subject to a transfer embargo until this week. Now they are free to start bringing in new players and Darretn Ferguson has identified Caldwell as an early signing. It has been suggested that he's already held talks with Preston and it would come as no surprise if he did sign for them.
