No place like home for Nugent
The Burnley striker, a summer acquisition after a disappointing spell at Portsmouth, came off the bench to strike twice in the second half.
A first-half penalty from Graham Alexander was cancelled out by a Darren Bent strike six minutes before the interval.
Nugent was brought on after 57 minutes by manager Owen Coyle and his two strikes earned Burnley a 3-1 victory - their third home victory since being promoted to the Premier League.
Asked which of the two goals was the best, he told Sky Sports:
"It's got to be the second, a left-foot swinger."
Nugent said he had a point to prove, adding: "I want to show Portsmouth what they are missing.
"I think our home form is the key. If our home record is good enough we will stay up."
Alexander said all Burnley's players have something to prove.
"We have to match that hunger throughout the season," he said.
"We need to win some points away."
Coyle described Nugent's goals as "sublime", adding: "He showed his quality."
The Burnley boss described Saturday's match as "a hard day's work and a bit of quality to go with it".
Sunderland manager Steve Bruce admitted he was disappointed with the result.
"I do not think we deserved to lose," he said. "I think Burnley scored two great goals. I think we looked a good team in the first half.
"We have yet to produce a full 90 minutes."
