Mowbray is new Middlesbrough boss

26 October 2010 12:59
Former Celtic manager Gordon Strachan has been replaced by former Celtic manager Tony Mowbray as the new manager of Championship strugglers Middlesbrough. Mowbray took the job at Celtic when Strachan left at the end of the 2008/09 season and soon after Strachan made a return to English football with Middlesbrough. The new jobs didn't go well for either of them; Mowbray lasted less than a season at Celtic whilst Strachan left 'Boro recently after a poor start to this season.Being a former Middlesbrough player, Mowbray was always one of the favourites for the job. He was a player with Middlesbrough during their difficult days of the mid 1980s alongside current Burnley boss Brian Laws. His appointment will be confirmed this afternoon and for Mowbray this will be the fifth club he's managed, following on from his caretaker role at Ipswich and spells at Hibs, West Brom and Celtic. He already has one promotion to the Premier League as a manager. After missing out in the play offs in 2007 with West Brom, he took them up the following year only for them to be relegated again in 2009.He'll find some familiar faces in the home dressing room at the Riverside with Stephen McManus, Scott McDonald, Barry Robson, Chris Killen and Willo Flood all having played for him at Celtic and Kevin Thomson at Hibs.
